Summer Tips

Beach, sun, summer... kids home from school, and snacks!

Unlike the Holidays in fall and winter, summer months are a wonderful time to satisfy everyone's cravings for sweets in the healthiest of ways. With plenty of fruits and vegetables at their best, go ahead and load up on all those delectable minerals and vitamins!

Not only the nutrients like dietary fiber, potassium, and antioxidants found in fruits are good for your entire body, they keep the teeth, the bone that supports your teeth, gums and tissues that line the mouth and tongue in tip-top shape.

Here are some dentist-approved choices:

Melons:

The amount of water found in these helps dilute the effects of sugars they contain. In addition, cantaloupe is loaded with potassium, a nutrient that helps promote good bone density.

Apples:

Fiber found in apples (and other firm fruits and vegetables) stimulates saliva flow, which helps wash away lingering food pieces and neutralizes harmful acids.

Bananas:

Also high in potassium and fiber, bananas literally make your mouth water as much as apples do. And so if you really want to splurge, go ahead and add a little bit of ice cream (stress on "little bit") to make it a banana split. Extra saliva will help keep at bay the cavity-making sugars found in ice cream.

And of course, fruits or not, summer is no excuse to stop brushing and flossing your teeth regularly! So have fun, stay cool and smile big!
